Wizkid’s Made in Lagos becomes top-selling African album in U.S.
Nigerian singer Wizkid’s 2020 album Made in Lagos has surpassed 900,000 sales in the United States, becoming the first African project to reach that milestone, music tracking service Chart Data said on Monday.
The album, released through Starboy Entertainment and RCA Records, fuses Afrobeats with R&B and dancehall and includes the hit single Essence featuring Tems, which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has earned five-times Platinum certification.
With 1.35 billion premium audio streams in the U.S. contributing to its sales, Made in Lagos is fewer than 100,000 units away from Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
It leads other successful African albums in the U.S. market, including Burna Boy’s African Giant at about 400,000 units and Davido’s Timeless at 300,000, according to Chart Data.
