Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara Replaces Local Councils Amid Tenure Expiration

Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara has ordered the Heads of Local Government Administration to assume control of the 23 local government areas in the state. This comes as the three-year tenure of local government chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors expires.

The expiration of the tenure has caused tension, with youths seizing control of some council secretariats and reports of armed youths in riverine areas. The situation follows a recent court ruling that nullified a law passed by the state assembly to extend the tenure of local government chairmen by six months .

The police have pledged to manage any issues arising from the tenure expiration. Fubara has thanked the outgoing chairmen and councillors for their service and commended their dedication .

The political crisis in Rivers State began with an attempt by lawmakers to impeach Fubara in October 2023, dividing the House of Assembly. The situation has led to a court battle over the legitimacy of lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

Outgone Chairman Accuses Rivers State Governor Fubara of Hiring Gunmen and Cultists to Cause Mayhem

In a shocking turn of events, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, the outgone council chairman of Ikwerre local government area, has accused Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Chief of Staff Edison Ehie of hiring gunmen and cultists to wreak havoc in the 23 local government councils.

In a trending video, Nwanosike alleged that Fubara and Ehie recruited gunmen from the creeks and unleashed them on the state, resulting in shootings and looting of council properties. He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and uphold the constitution to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

However, the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Warisenibo Joseph Johnson, dismissed Nwanosike’s claims as “funny” and “desperate.” Johnson maintained that the state is peaceful, with no reports of gunfire or violence.
