NLC Urges Tinubu to Engage with Protest Leaders, Address Citizens’ Grievances

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to invite the leaders of a planned nationwide protest to discuss their grievances, amidst growing concerns over the country’s economic hardship.

In a statement released on Monday, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the need for the government to address the challenges facing citizens, including inflation, food and electricity tariff hikes, and other issues.

Ajaero criticized the government’s hostile response to the planned protest, stating that it fails to offer tangible remedies to the suffering of the populace. He emphasized that citizens demand a listening ear and an empathetic heart from their government.

The NLC president noted that the current economic situation, with inflation at 34.19%, has created dire times for Nigerians, who are angry and frustrated with the government’s response. He urged the government to engage in dialogue rather than confrontation, saying, “You cannot smack a child and ask the child not to cry.”

The planned protest, scheduled for later this month, aims to draw attention to the country’s economic woes and demand action from the government. The NLC’s call for dialogue comes as tensions rise ahead of the protest, with many Nigerians expressing frustration with the government’s handling of the economy.
