NBA President Calls on Judiciary to Reclaim Role as “Last Hope of the Common Man”

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has urged the judiciary to recommit itself to being the last hope of the common man, as the Supreme Court marked the opening of the 2025/2026 Legal Year on Saturday.

Speaking at the Supreme Court’s Special Session, which also featured the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on newly elevated lawyers, Osigwe highlighted the need for reforms to strengthen the administration of justice in the country.

He emphasized the importance of digital transformation of courts, speedy and fair trials, and transparent judicial appointments, noting that justice delayed remains justice denied.

“The judiciary must reclaim its role as the last hope of the common man,” Osigwe said, stressing the need to restore public confidence in the system.

Addressing the new SANs, he congratulated them while reminding them that the rank carried greater responsibilities. “Your elevation is not a mere ornament, but a call to higher duty, integrity, and leadership in the legal profession,” he said.

The NBA President called on both the Bench and the Bar to rededicate themselves to ensuring justice becomes a daily reality for Nigerians.

“God bless the Supreme Court of Nigeria, God bless the Judiciary, God bless the Nigerian Bar Association, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Osigwe concluded.
