Meta’s Threat to Exit Nigeria Doesn’t Absolve Them of Liability, Says FCCPC
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has responded to Meta’s threat to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria, saying the company’s decision doesn’t absolve them of liability for violating Nigerian laws.
The FCCPC investigated Meta and WhatsApp for allegedly violating the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act and the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation. The commission found that Meta engaged in multiple and repeated infringements, including denying Nigerians control over their personal data and discriminating against users compared to those in other jurisdictions.

The FCCPC noted that Meta has faced similar penalties in other countries, including the US, EU, India, South Korea, France, and Australia, but has never threatened to exit those markets. Instead, the company has complied with local regulations.
The commission emphasized its commitment to consumer protection and data privacy in Nigeria, stating that Meta must comply with Nigerian law and respect consumer rights.
