Kenya Protests Update: Ruto Will Not Sign Controversial Finance Bill
After a week of protests across Kenya, President William Ruto has announced that he won’t sign the controversial Finance Bill 2024. The bill, passed by MPs on Tuesday, has sparked outrage among Kenyan youth, who feel burdened by the proposed tax hikes.
Violence and Protests
At least five people have died, with about 40 people being treated in hospita. The protests turned violent, with clashes between police and demonstrators, and the Kenyan parliament was set on fire. Hundreds of MPs were unable to leave the building and reportedly took cover in the basement. President Ruto has blamed the violence on “criminals” and vowed a “full response”.
