The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has finalized plans to relocate the Apo Mechanic Village to a permanent site in Wasa district, 25 years after the idea was first proposed.

The relocation aims to provide a better alternative for thousands of auto technicians, spare parts dealers, and other service providers currently operating on the road corridor.

Wike dismissed speculations of a deadline for occupiers to move out or risk demolition, emphasizing that no such directive has been given. He also warned against nepotism in the allocation of shops, stressing that the shops will not be allocated to girlfriends, relatives, or uncles.

A 19-member technical committee has been inaugurated to oversee the relocation process, which is expected to take place within three months. The committee will enumerate eligible persons, prepare the relocation site, handle compensation matters, establish demarcations, and review the layout.

The relocation is seen as a significant step towards restoring hope to the technicians and dealers who had lost hope of a better working environment. The minister’s decision to provide an alternative before demolition is seen as a humane approach to the situation.

The chairman of the committee, Malam Abubakar Makama, expressed gratitude to the Coordinator for taking action within three months in office, and the committee is set to work diligently to ensure a successful relocation process.
