Enugu: We’ll immortalise Christian Chukwu – Gov. Peter Mbah

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah has pledged to immortalise the legacy of Christian Chukwu, the former Super Eagles captain and coach, who passed away on April 12, at 74.

During a condolence visit to the late football icon’s family, Mbah described Chukwu’s death as a profound loss not only to his loved ones but to the entire state of Enugu.

Chukwu, a native of Enugu, led Nigeria to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980 as team captain. He died in his hometown and is survived by his wife, Lillian, their children, and grandchildren.

Mbah assured the bereaved family and Nigerians that his administration will take deliberate steps to ensure Chukwu’s contributions to Nigerian football are permanently remembered.

The Governor shared on X handle on Thursday, April 17 wrote: “Yesterday, I paid a condolence visit to the widow and family of our late legend, Chairman Christian Chukwu, who passed away while I was on an official trip outside the country.

“Chukwu was more than a football icon. He was a national treasure, a symbol of dedication, discipline and inspiration to many. His name is etched into the history of sports in Nigeria and beyond. We, the people and government of Enugu State, are thoroughly devastated by his death.

“I want his family to know that they are not alone in this moment. This is a collective loss. We will walk with them through this difficult time, and will ensure that his name and legacy are immortalised in a manner befitting the greatness he embodied.”
