Constituents of Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency in Enugu State have submitted a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recall Hon. Martins Oke, their representative in the Federal House of Representatives.

The petition, dated March 27, 2025, alleges that Oke has failed to deliver on his promises, with no notable bills or motions to his name, and no visible constituency projects.

The petitioners also claim that Oke was not duly elected, but rather imposed on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the wishes of the party. They argue that he lost the general election by a wide margin, but was declared the winner by the Appeal Court based on technicalities.

Furthermore, the petitioners accuse Oke of failing to engage with his constituents, never holding town hall meetings, and remaining disconnected from the people.

They also allege that he has shown a lack of commitment to addressing pressing issues affecting the constituency.

The petition has garnered significant support, with at least 50% of registered voters in the constituency signing in support of the recall. This fulfills the constitutional requirements for the process, paving the way for Oke’s potential recall.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Oke’s representation has been called into question. In November 2023, constituents protested against an Appeal Court judgment that declared Oke the winner of the election, despite allegations of irregularities.

Oke has, however, made some efforts to support his constituents. In August 2024, he distributed three trucks of fertilizers to farmers in the constituency as part of efforts to bolster agricultural productivity.

SUBJECT: PETITION FOR THE RECALL OF RT. HON. MARTINS OKE, MEMBER REPRESENTING IGBO-ETITI/UZO-UWANI FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY IN THE FEDERAL HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

We, the undersigned registered voters of Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency, represented by Mr. Ugwuagbo Emmanuel Chizoba, alongside Mr. Clinton Ogbonna, Mr. Sabinus Amah, and Mr. Stephen Okenwa, pursuant to the provisions of Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), hereby submit this petition for the recall of Rt. Hon. Martins Oke, the elected member representing our constituency in the Federal House of Representatives.

GROUNDS FOR RECALL

1. WE DIDN’T ELECT HIM: Martins Oke, after being imposed on the PDP faithfuls against the wishes of the party faithfuls, lost the general election by a wide margin but the Appeal Court declared him winner based on technicalities. We want to take back our mandate that he snatched through the courts.

2. NON-PERFORMANCE: This is his 3rd term in the Federal House of Representatives. There’s no popular bill or motion to his name. There are no visible constituency projects to his name, and we don’t see or hear him during the NASS sittings. He contributes NOTHING to local , State or national discourse. He isn’t representing us at all.

3. LACK OF CONSTITUENCY ENGAGEMENT: He has no known constituency office and is hardly seen in his constituency. He has never held a town hall meeting to interact with his constituents and remains completely disconnected from the people. We don’t see him at home, we don’t see him on TV and we still don’t see him on seat during NASS Sessions.

4. INCOMPETENCE AND NEGLECT OF CONSTITUENTS’ PLIGHTS: He has shown a lack of commitment to the welfare of his constituents, failing to address pressing issues affecting the people of Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency.

SIGNATURES OF REGISTERED VOTERS

In accordance with the constitutional requirements, this petition is duly signed by at least 50% +1 of registered voters in Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency as evidence of our collective decision to recall Rt. Hon. Martins Oke. Attached to this petition are:

PRAYER

We, the people of Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency, humbly request that INEC initiate the process of verification and, upon successful validation, conduct a referendum for the recall of Rt. Hon. Martins Oke within the stipulated time frame of 90 days as provided by the Constitution.

We trust in the fairness and transparency of INEC in ensuring that the will of the people prevails.
