Buhari, police IGP Idris meets behind closed door

President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, held a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday, January 14, making the second time in 2019.

The Nation reports that the meeting between the duo started around 4.30 pm just after the president returned from a function at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja. The meeting with sketchy details was ongoing at the time of this report.

The duo had earlier met in same manner on Friday, January, 4, 2019, shortly after the Jumma’at prayer at the State House mosque.

Reports says  Idris, 59, was due for retirement after attaining the mandatory 35 years in service on January, 15, 2019.

Two groups earlier urged President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the tenure of Ibrahim Idris, who has reportedly reached the retirement age of 60. The groups, Tiv Youth Council, and Arewa Youth Assembly on Thursday, January, 10, warned that removing the police boss as the general elections approach could pose security risks to the coming polls. Mike Msuaan, who is president of Tiv Youth Council; and Muhammad Salihu, speaker, Arewa Youth Assembly, said their desire for free, fair and credible elections prompted their call for the IGP’s tenure to be extended.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on President Muhammadu Buhari to drop the alleged plan to extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, by another six months. Kola Ologbondiyan, the national publicity secretary of PDP told journalists on Sunday, December 23, that any plan to extend the tenure of Idris will be seen as a plot to perpetrate rigging in the 2019 election.
