Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday led a delegation of senators to the Abuja residence of the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea to commiserate with his family following his death on November 18.

Ezea, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District, died at the age of 62 in a private hospital in Lagos after a brief illness. Earlier on Tuesday, the Senate had adjourned plenary in his honour to allow lawmakers pay a condolence visit.

Speaking during the visit, Akpabio said the lawmakers came to stand with the bereaved family and to assure them that they were not alone in their grief.

“It is not always a very good experience to stay with a colleague for over two years, see each other daily, see him more than family members, and then all of a sudden he vanishes just like that,” Akpabio said.

“We are gathered here in our numbers to commiserate with your family and to let you know that you are not alone in mourning your late husband, father, brother and uncle, Distinguished Senator Ezea.”

The Senate President described the late lawmaker as a dignified and respectful colleague, adding that his sudden passing came as a shock to the entire chamber.

“You can imagine the shock when we heard of his demise because there was never a time he walked into the chamber and showed that he was sick in any form. But the news came suddenly that he had passed on,” Akpabio said.

In his response, Jideofor Ezea, son of the late senator, expressed appreciation to Akpabio and the lawmakers for the condolence visit. He said the family would not forget the gesture, noting that their words of encouragement and prayers provided comfort during their difficult time.
