Defending champions Nigeria’s D’Tigress will know their quarter-final opponents today as Angola face Cameroon in a crucial playoff clash at the ongoing FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 tournament in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The Nigerian team, led by head coach Rena Wakama, topped Group D with back-to-back victories over Rwanda and Mozambique. The six-time champions began their title defence in dominant fashion, blowing out Rwanda 92-45, before edging Mozambique 60-55 in a tightly contested encounter.
The win over Mozambique extended D’Tigress’ remarkable unbeaten run at the continental tournament to 26 games, a streak that dates back to the 2015 edition in Cameroon — the last time Nigeria suffered a loss, which came in the semi-finals against the hosts.
The winner of the Cameroon vs. Angola playoff — taking place Wednesday night — will face D’Tigress in the quarter-finals on Thursday, July 31.
Cameroon come into the knockout fixture with a mixed record, having defeated AfroBasket debutants South Sudan 70-63 in their opener before falling 75-49 to Mali. With a total of 119 points scored and 138 conceded, their -19 points differential highlights defensive vulnerabilities.
Angola, meanwhile, have struggled throughout the group stage, losing both matches — 70-54 to Egypt and 82-74 to hosts Ivory Coast — and finishing with a points differential of -24.
Regardless of who emerges from the playoff, Nigeria will enter the quarter-final clash as overwhelming favourites to advance to the semi-finals. A win on Thursday would not only push the D’Tigress a step closer to a record-extending seventh continental title but also guarantee a spot at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for early 2026.
