BONA NAIJAWAEC 2025 WASSCE Results Show Sharp Decline in Performance
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), revealing a significant 33.8% drop in overall candidate performance compared to the previous year.
According to WAEC, nearly 1.9 million candidates sat for the examination across member countries. While over 70% of students earned credits in at least five subjects, including core subjects like English Language and Mathematics, the Council noted that regional insecurity and ongoing economic challenges heavily impacted student preparation and outcomes.
In a concerning development, results for approximately 215,000 candidates have been withheld over suspected examination irregularities, pending further investigation.
WAEC has urged schools and stakeholders to intensify efforts in preparing students for future assessments while calling on governments to address structural issues affecting education in the region.
