US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman Resigns

Meg Whitman, the US Ambassador to Kenya, has resigned from her position, effective immediately. This move comes just a week after Donald Trump’s return to the White House and amid growing calls from Kenyans for her removal.

Whitman, a billionaire and former Wall Street executive, had been serving as ambassador since 2021. During her tenure, she focused on strengthening trade, health, and security ties between the US and Kenya. Notably, she played a key role in elevating Kenya’s status as the first major non-NATO ally in sub-Saharan Africa.

Whitman’s resignation was met with mixed reactions, with some critics accusing her of not speaking out strongly enough against human rights abuses in Kenya. Others praised her efforts to promote economic cooperation and development between the two nations.

The US Embassy in Nairobi will now be led by Charge d’Affaires Marc Dillard until a new ambassador is appointed. Whitman expressed confidence that the strong relationship between the US and Kenya would continue under the new administration.
