Tanker Explosion: Police Confirm 73 Deaths, Others in Critical Condition

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that 73 people lost their lives in a tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State on Saturday.

Earlier reports indicated that a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, lost control and caught fire, initially claiming at least 50 lives.

In a statement released on Sunday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed that 73 bodies were recovered from the scene. The death toll could rise as several critically injured victims are currently fighting for their lives.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun expressed heartfelt condolences to the state government and its citizens. He also stressed the need for strict adherence to road safety protocols to prevent such tragedies and condemned the negligence often leading to such catastrophic events.

The IGP instructed State Police Commissioners to strengthen their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) and collaborate with traffic management agencies to enforce compliance with traffic regulations. He also urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and follow traffic rules to avoid further tragedies.
