Supreme court debunks claim of CJN being investigated by the DSS

The Supreme Court has debunked claims that Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), is being investigated by the Department of State Services (DSS) over his recent comment about the Integrity Group.

Ariwoola who attended a dinner organized in his honour in Rivers state weeks ago, had said that he’s glad that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state is a member of the Integrity Group, a group of stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as chairman of the party.

The comment led to controversies and it was also alleged that five Justices of the Court have demanded resignation from office by the CJN over the same issue.

However, in a statement released by the Director of Information and Press of the apex Court, Dr Festus Akande, those peddling the rumour were asked to desist in their own interest.

FIRS

It read;

“We have read with dismay and shock a publication with the above caption by an online media outfit, “People’s Gazette,” alleging that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, was grilled by the DSS for the remarks he made in ‘Port Harcourt at a state banquet’ and that ‘five Justices of Supreme Court are calling for his resignation.’

“Just like our earlier press statement debunking this barefaced falsehood and mischievous antics aimed at scoring very cheap and unpopular political gains in this era of aggressive and mudslinging politicking, we wish to state in very clear and unmistaken terms, that this is yet another round of the avalanche of lies that have been disingenuously packaged by individuals with an unenviable pedigree to malign the character and personality of not just the CJN but several other Judicial Officers that they considered to be too unpliable and principled to be approached for any form of underhand dealings, especially as election cases (petitions) will soon be streaming to the tribunals (courts) for adjudication.

“It has become very obvious that those with sinister motives have perfected plans to unleash all manner of coordinated attacks on Judicial Officers, starting from the CJN with a view to arm-twisting and blackmailing and ridiculing them to silence, ultimately for their ulterior motives.

“For sure, it will only take an undiscerning mind to believe this string of falsehood, misinformation and blackmail.

“Nigerians are much wiser to fall for this armchair criticism and disingenuous sponsorships of paid crowds who masquerade as ‘civil society organisations’ to help them further their inordinate ambition of gagging and fettering the Nigerian Judiciary so that they could cowardly do their biddings.

“The publication, which was laced with tissues of lies, non-existent sources of information and unsubstantiated claims, clearly showed the unwholesome intentions of the authors.

“For the records, no single Justice of the Supreme has asked the CJN to resign, and no Justice of Supreme Court has or is writing any letter of protest whatsoever.

“This stream of falsehood, as usual, is flowing from the same discredited source that is hell-bent on destroying the Judiciary for some selfish interest.

“The Supreme Court Justices are united and firmly behind the CJN; and are, as usual, all working assiduously to dispense justice without fear or favour.

“Neither the CJN nor the Honourable Justices of the Supreme Court or other Courts for that matter, are politicians, so, none of them should be dragged into politics in any form whatsoever.

“Our advice to this set of rabble-rousers whose stock in trade is character assassination via dissemination of false information to create tension and disaffection, is to have a rethink and engage in meaningful productive activities that will move the nation forward. A word is enough for the wise.”

Paystack has suspended its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Ezra Olubi, following serious allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse raised by his former partner, Max Obae.

The suspension, announced on November 14, 2025, comes amid growing scrutiny of conduct and power dynamics within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.

Obae accused Olubi of manipulative, coercive, and emotionally abusive behaviour during their relationship, alleging that this extended into the workplace, where Olubi reportedly mistreated subordinates. The claims sparked wide public outrage, amplified by the resurfacing of decade-old posts from Olubi’s X (formerly Twitter) account containing explicit references to bestiality and pedophilia.

In a public statement, Paystack confirmed that Olubi had been immediately suspended pending the outcome of a formal internal investigation. The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for employees, customers, and partners.

The allegations have reignited broader conversations around accountability, workplace ethics, and abuse of power in the Nigerian tech scene an industry long praised for innovation but increasingly challenged to confront issues of misconduct within its ranks.

Court Orders Suspension of PDP National Convention Over Lamido’s Exclusion

Federal High Court suspends PDP National Convention, orders the party to allow former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido to buy forms, undergo screening, and contest for chairman. INEC barred from monitoring until compliance.

A Federal High Court has ordered the suspension of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention until former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido is allowed to fully participate in the chairmanship contest.

In a ruling delivered on Friday, the court held that the party must permit Lamido to purchase the nomination form, undergo screening, and contest for the national chairmanship position. The judge stated that preventing the former governor from acquiring the form amounted to a violation of his constitutional and party rights.

The court emphasized that proceeding with the convention without resolving Lamido’s complaint would constitute a breach of fair hearing and due process, noting that internal party democracy must comply with established legal standards.

Additionally, the court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to refrain from monitoring or recognizing the convention until the PDP fully complies with the order.

The PDP has not yet issued an official reaction to the ruling.

African Union Rejects Christian Genocide Claims in Nigeria After Trump Threats

The African Union (AU) has firmly dismissed allegations of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, countering recent claims and implied threats of U.S. military intervention made by President Donald Trump.

Speaking at a United Nations press conference on Wednesday, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the allegations as “dangerously misleading” and warned against external narratives that could inflame tensions in Nigeria.

“There is no evidence of a systematic campaign aimed at exterminating Christians in Nigeria,” Youssouf stated. “Extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP have, in fact, targeted far more Muslims than Christians since their insurgency began in 2009.”

AU: Violence Is Terrorism, Not Religious Cleansing

Youssouf explained that the AU continues to monitor the security situation in Nigeria’s northeast, where Boko Haram’s insurgency remains active. He stressed that the violence does not fit the definition of genocide and should instead be understood as “indiscriminate terrorism driven by extremist ideology, not religious policy.”

Nigeria Agrees with AU Position

The Nigerian government has also rejected Trump’s characterization of events. Officials say that both Christian and Muslim communities have suffered, and that framing the conflict as a religious war undermines counterterrorism cooperation.

AU Warns Against Foreign Military Intervention

Responding to Trump’s threat of possible military action to “protect Christians,” Youssouf urged the U.S. to avoid unilateral decisions.

“Nigeria is a sovereign state. Any intervention must be coordinated with African institutions and grounded in facts, not political sentiment,” he said.

He added that mischaracterizing Nigeria’s complex security challenges could worsen religious tensions and derail stabilization efforts.
