Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has refuted claims that he said former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), narrowly escaped a Boko Haram attack. Ndume clarified that his remarks during a Channels Television interview were misinterpreted.
He explained that he referred to an attack in Buratai, a town in Borno State that shares a name with the former COAS, not an attack on Buratai himself.
“What I said… was that even two days ago, Buratai (town) was attacked in front of the operations base in Borno,” Ndume stated. “I am surprised that the town Buratai could be misconstrued as the person of General Buratai.”
The senator detailed the damage caused by the insurgents, including the destruction and theft of military equipment such as MRAPs and heavy-duty weapons.
Ndume also raised alarm over worsening insecurity nationwide, stating that all geopolitical zones except the South-South are affected, with that region facing issues like oil theft. He noted the South-West remains relatively secure.
