Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has given his approval for a new minimum wage of N85,000 for civil servants in the state. This landmark decision, announced by the Head of Service, George Nwaeke, follows a closed-door meeting with labor leaders and senior government officials.

Implementation and Details

The implementation of the new minimum wage takes effect immediately, with a committee established to oversee the rollout. Chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the committee includes labor leaders and will work out the finer details for seamless implementation.

Labor Leaders’ Reaction

Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Team, Chukwu Emecheta, praised Governor Fubara’s commitment to workers’ welfare, stating, “Today, we are happy that our expectation for our governor has been met.” Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Rivers State Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, noted that the increased minimum wage will greatly alleviate economic hardships faced by workers.

Context and Significance

This move follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the minimum wage bill into law in July 2024, raising the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000. Rivers and Lagos States have opted to pay N85,000, surpassing the federally mandated minimum wage.
