NLC Suspends Strike Action on Minimum Wage, Awaits Presidential Decision

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the postponement of its planned strike action regarding the new national minimum wage, pending President Bola Tinubu’s decision on the proposed figures.

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, made this declaration at the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ajaero emphasized that the Tripartite Committee’s proposals are currently with the President, and the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) will convene to discuss the new figure once it is revealed.

He expressed optimism that President Tinubu will make a favorable decision, citing the previous administration’s increase of the minimum wage from N27,000 to N30,000.
Ajaero also criticized some state governors who oppose the higher minimum wage, questioning their financial capabilities and urging them to justify their own salaries and privileges.

He highlighted the inconsistency of governors advocating for decentralization while collecting uniform salaries, regardless of their states’ revenue generation. Ajaero praised governors like Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, who pays a minimum wage of N70,000,
