Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has accused the ruling government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately instigating and sustaining the internal crisis within the Labour Party in an attempt to discredit him and undermine his growing political influence.
Speaking during a media engagement on Arise TV on Monday, Obi dismissed allegations that his inability to resolve the party’s leadership wrangling is a sign of weak leadership, calling such claims baseless and politically motivated.
“We now live in a country of propaganda and lies,” Obi said. “A party chairman refers to a governor in his party as a dwarf, with dwarf ideas, yet they turn around to accuse me of weakness. The crisis in the Labour Party is not organic—it has been instigated and sustained by the APC.”
Obi, who emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election and gained widespread support, particularly among young Nigerians, insisted that he has always demonstrated strong and principled leadership throughout his career in both the private and public sectors.
“I have run successful businesses, served as a governor, and shown no signs of weakness,” he stated. “Humility, patience, and tolerance are not weaknesses—they are virtues.”
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that leadership should not be judged by manufactured chaos or political sabotage, but by integrity, performance, and consistency in values.
The Labour Party has been rocked by a series of internal disputes in recent months, with factions trading accusations and court cases flying between rival leadership groups. While critics have pointed fingers at Obi’s perceived silence or inability to unite the party, he now contends that external forces—particularly from the APC—are actively exploiting and fueling the divisions.
Obi’s remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are calling for a strong and unified opposition to challenge the ruling party’s policies, especially amid growing economic and social hardship.
The APC is yet to respond to the latest allegations.
