Kwara United have emerged champions of the 2025 President Federation Cup after a tense penalty shootout victory over underdogs Abakaliki FC, winning 4-3 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Saturday.

The closely contested final ended goalless in regulation time, with both sides unable to convert several key chances.

The game was decided by penalties, where Kwara United held their nerve despite missing their first spot kick. The Afonja Warriors went on to convert their next four penalties, while Abakaliki FC faltered twice, handing Kwara United their first-ever Federation Cup triumph.

With this historic win, Kwara United will now represent Nigeria in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup, marking a major achievement for the Ilorin-based side.

The real fairytale of this year’s tournament, however, was written by Abakaliki FC. The lower-tier team shocked the football world with a sensational run to the final, eliminating several top-flight sides and earning national admiration for their resilience and fearless performances.

The 2025 President Federation Cup final drew massive attention, not only for the drama on the pitch but also for the storylines of determination, grit, and the magic of cup football in Nigeria.
