Kano State Government to spend N2.5bn on mass weddings

The Kano State government has allocated N2.5 billion for mass weddings across the state’s 44 local government areas. This initiative aims to support vulnerable girls and promote marriage as a redeeming feature. The state’s Commissioner of Planning and Budget, Musa Sulaiman Shanono, announced this while presenting the breakdown of the N719.7 billion approved budget for 2025.

In addition to the mass wedding allocation, the government has also earmarked N6.2 billion for free education programs (N4 billion) and free school feeding (N2.2 billion). The education sector received the largest share of the budget, with N205.9 billion allocated, representing 29% of the total budget size.

This mass wedding initiative is not new to Kano State, as it was first introduced by the Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso-led administration. In 2023, the state government conducted a mass wedding for over 1,800 couples at a cost of N854 million.
