Statement from the Labour Party Caretaker Committee

April 4, 2025

The Labour Party Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, wishes to address recent misinterpretations regarding the Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, concerning the leadership of our party.

Clarification of the Supreme Court Judgment

The Supreme Court’s ruling emphasized that leadership disputes within political parties are internal matters and fall outside the jurisdiction of the courts. This aligns with the appellate court’s decision on January 17, 2025, which recognized that such issues are non-justiciable.

Implications for Party Leadership

It is crucial to understand that the Supreme Court did not affirm Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party. Instead, the Court underscored that leadership matters should be resolved internally, in accordance with the party’s constitution and established procedures.

Role of the Caretaker Committee

In light of the leadership vacuum and to ensure the smooth functioning of the party, the Labour Party constituted a National Caretaker Committee on September 4, 2024. This committee, chaired by Senator Nenadi Usman with Senator Darlington Nwokocha as Secretary, has been diligently overseeing the party’s affairs.

Call for Unity and Adherence to Party Constitution

We urge all party members and stakeholders to respect the decisions made through our internal mechanisms and to work collaboratively towards the party’s objectives. It is imperative to adhere to the Labour Party’s constitution and to address any disagreements through the appropriate internal channels.

The Caretaker Committee remains committed to steering the party towards unity, growth, and the realization of our collective goals.

Signed:

Senator Nenadi Usman
Chairman, Labour Party Caretaker Committee

Senator Darlington Nwokocha
Secretary, Labour Party Caretaker Committee
