John Mahama Promises New Beginning for Ghana After Election Victory

Former President John Mahama has been officially declared the winner of Ghana’s presidential election, securing 56.6% of the vote against Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s 41.6%. This marks the largest margin of victory in the country in 24 years.

Mahama, who previously led Ghana from 2012 to 2017, has promised “a new beginning, a new direction” for the country. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, stating that he felt “humbled” by the outcome.

The election, which saw a 60.9% voter turnout, was largely peaceful, despite some isolated incidents of violence. Two people were killed in separate incidents, and the electoral commission office in Damongo was destroyed.

Mahama’s victory marks a significant comeback, having lost the 2020 election. His National Democratic Congress (NDC) party has alternated power with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) since the return of multi-party politics in 1992.

Ghanaians are hopeful that Mahama’s second term will bring about positive change, particularly in addressing the country’s economic crisis, unemployment, and cost of living. Mahama has pledged to transform Ghana into a “24-hour economy” and has promised to work towards a better future for all Ghanaians.

Mahama is set to be sworn in as president on January 7, 2025.
