President Tinubu sends condolences to Iranian nation over Raisi’s death

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has been confirmed killed after the helicopter he was traveling in crashed in poor weather.

The bodies of Raisi, as well as the foreign minister and others who were aboard, were found on Monday morning, some hours after their helicopter crashed in Irans’s wild northwest region, state media reported.

The accident challenges the country’s senior leadership as Iran sits amid heightened regional and global tensions centered on the war in Gaza.

63-year-old Raisi was elected president on his second attempt in 2021, and since taking office, has overseen a tightening of morality laws, a bloody crackdown on anti-government protests triggered by the death in custody of 22-year-old woman Mahsa Amini, and taken a tougher approach to nuclear talks with world powers.

President Bola Tinubu has sent his condolences to the government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran over the passing of President Ebrahim Raisi; Iranian foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials in a helicopter crash.  

President Tinubu expressed profound grief over this disturbing tragedy, and described President Raisi as a leader who was passionately committed to the development of Iran.
