Ings scores as Southampton cling on to beat Liverpool

Liverpool failed to win for the third consecutive Premier League game as Danny Ings’s second-minute goal earned Southampton a 1-0 win at St. Mary’s on Monday.

The English champions remain top of the table on goal difference over Manchester United, but have now played a game more than the Red Devils.

Southampton are only four points off the top as they moved up to sixth in a tightly bunched division with just seven points separating Liverpool from West Ham in 10th.

A famous win continued a fine season so far for the Saints, and a the size of the achievement was reflected in tears of joy from manager Ralph Hassenhuttl at full-time.

FIRS

A first league defeat in three months may hasten Liverpool’s search for a centre-back in the January transfer window.

Without the injured Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Klopp started two of his first-choice midfielders from their title-winning campaign, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, together at the heart of his defence.

Southampton had not scored in their last three games to temper their hopes of a push for European football, but took just two minutes to break the deadlock in style through former Liverpool striker Ings.

Liverpool did not deal with James Ward-Prowse’s angled free-kick into the box and Ings perfectly hooked his shot over Alisson Becker into the far corner.

Southampton had key absentees themselves with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy missing due to a positive test for coronavirus, while Oriol Romeu, Jannik Vestergaard and Che Adams were out injured.

Fraser Forster was making his first Saints appearance since May 2019, but the former England international was rarely tested to earn his clean sheet.

The visitors could easily have found themselves 2-0 down before the break when Southampton substitute Nathan Tella was inches away from his first senior goal with a curling effort from the edge of the area that flew just wide.

If Jurgen Klopp’s men were too passive in the first-half, they started the second-half with the intensity they have made their trademark in recent seasons as Southampton were pinned inside their own half.

Sadio Mane was the visitors’ biggest threat on his return to St Mary’s as Jack Stephens made a last-ditch challenge to block his route to goal before Kyle Walker-Peters was lucky to escape without conceding a penalty for obstructing another burst from the Senegalese into the box.

Thiago Alcantara was making just his second Liverpool start since a much-anticipated move from Bayern Munich, but even the Spaniard’s range of passing could not cut through Southampton’s determined defence.

Mane had Liverpool’s only shot on target 15 minutes from time when his tame effort was easily held by Forster low to his left.

Southampton could have sealed a huge win moments later when Alisson was caught well off his line by Yan Valery, whose shot lacked the power to beat Henderson in a race to the goal line.

Liverpool so often dug themselves out of problems with late goals in romping to the title last season, but have failed to do so over the festive period, also dropping points against struggling West Brom and Newcastle.

United and Manchester City now hold the upper hand in the title race as they can both move ahead of Liverpool should they win their games in hand.

Sunderland stunned Chelsea with a 2-1 Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from substitute Chemsdine Talbi.

Chelsea took an early lead in the fourth minute when Alejandro Garnacho scored his first goal for the club, but Wilson Isidor levelled for Sunderland in the 22nd minute, poking home from close range after the hosts failed to clear a long throw.

The match looked set to end in a draw before Talbi latched onto a pass from fellow substitute Brian Bobbey in the third minute of added time and fired past Robert Sánchez to seal a dramatic win.

The result lifted Sunderland to second place in the Premier League table, while Chelsea’s inconsistency under continued scrutiny after another disappointing home defeat.

Lionel Messi has officially signed a three-year contract extension with Inter Miami CF, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2028 MLS season. The renewal ensures that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue his remarkable journey in the United States, extending his influence both on and off the pitch.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has scored 71 goals and provided 44 assists in 82 appearances, leading the club to its first major trophies — the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. His performances have transformed Inter Miami into one of the most watched and commercially successful teams in Major League Soccer history.

Speaking after signing the new deal, Messi expressed his excitement about continuing the club’s long-term project and said he looks forward to debuting at the new Miami Freedom Park stadium, which opens in 2026.

FIRS

“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved so far, but there’s so much more to come. Miami feels like home, and I’m excited about the future of this team and this city,” said Messi.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham praised Messi’s professionalism and leadership, describing him as “the heartbeat of our club,” while MLS Commissioner Don Garber hailed his continued presence as a “transformative moment for American soccer.”

Messi’s new contract is expected to include ambassadorial roles within the club and the league, ensuring his legacy extends well beyond his playing career.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated El Clásico clash against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on October 26, Rashford revealed that facing Los Blancos was one of the main motivations behind his move to Spain.

“Playing in El Clásico is something every player dreams about,” Rashford said. “It’s one of the biggest matches in world football — and a major reason why I came to Barcelona.”
