Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has extended his “grace and mercy” to 53 convicts serving various sentences within the Nigerian Correctional Service. This move is in line with the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
The breakdown of the pardon is as follows:
- 30 convicts have been granted a full remission of their sentences, including Olubo Sunday, Isah Umar Biodun, and Fawas Kareem.
- 12 convicts have been granted an outright pardon, including Olabomiji Nurudeen, Mustapha Isah, and Olalekan Abdullahi.
- 6 convicts sentenced to death have had their sentences commuted to outright release, except for Ojekunle Timothy, who will serve 15 years in prison instead.
- 4 convicts, including Sunday Morakinyo and Segun Olowookere, have had their death sentences commuted to outright pardon .
Notably, Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to death for stealing a fowl, has been granted a pardon. His case had gained significant public attention after his mother’s appeal for assistance went viral on social media .
