Ghana’s AFCON Hopes in Jeopardy After 2-0 Loss to Sudan
Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are hanging by a thread after their 2-0 loss to Sudan on October 15. This defeat marks their fourth consecutive winless match, leaving them in a precarious position.
The Black Stars struggled to find their footing against a well-organized Sudanese side, despite making a change to their starting lineup by bringing in Iñaki Williams for Jordan Ayew. Controlling possession in the first half wasn’t enough, as they failed to register a single shot on target from their four attempts.
Sudan capitalized on Ghana’s defensive lapses in the second half, with Ahmed Al-Tash scoring in the 62nd minute and Mohamed Abdelrahman doubling the lead just three minutes later. This loss puts Ghana five points behind Sudan, managed by former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah.
To keep their AFCON dreams alive, Ghana must win their remaining two matches against Angola on November 11 and Niger on November 19. It’s an uphill battle, but not impossible ¹.
