FCTA Taskforce Raids Beggars Off Abuja Streets, Apprehends 210

In a renewed drive to sanitize the streets of the nation’s capital, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has apprehended 210 individuals engaged in street begging and suspected criminal activities across various parts of Abuja.

The operation, spearheaded by the Social Development Secretariat (SDS), is part of a broader initiative aimed at restoring order and enhancing public safety within the Federal Capital Territory.

Hauwa Gimba of the NTA reports that the Acting Director of the Social Welfare Department, Gloria Onwuka, disclosed this during the official handing over of the arrested individuals at the Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre in Bwari Area Council.

According to Onwuka, the raid targets not only visible street beggars but also persons suspected to be using begging as a cover for other illicit activities. She emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that Abuja remains clean, safe, and compliant with social development standards.

“This is not just about aesthetics,” she said. “It’s about protecting vulnerable persons from exploitation and ensuring the security of law-abiding residents.”

The FCTA noted that the apprehended individuals will undergo profiling, rehabilitation, and where necessary, reintegration into their communities.

Authorities have warned that such operations will continue as part of a long-term strategy to curb street begging and its associated risks in the FCT.
