DStv, GOtv Now Fully Owned by Canal+ in $3 Billion Takeover Deal

Published

on

In a major shake-up of Africa’s media landscape, French media giant Canal+ has officially acquired 100% ownership of MultiChoice Group, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, in a deal valued at $3 billion (55 billion rand).

The acquisition was greenlit by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal on Wednesday, July 23, paving the way for full completion by October 8, 2025. Canal+, which previously held a 45% stake, secured the remaining 55% through a mandatory buyout offer made in 2023 at 125 rand per share.

FIRS

Conditions for Approval

The Tribunal’s approval came with strict public interest conditions to safeguard South Africa’s media sovereignty:

  • MultiChoice will retain its headquarters in South Africa.
  • Continued investment in local content and sports broadcasting.
  • Strong backing for South African content creators and media professionals.

Strategic Move into Africa

Calling the acquisition “transformative,” Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada stated:

“The combined group will benefit from enhanced scale, greater exposure to high-growth markets and the ability to deliver meaningful synergies.”

Canal+, already active in 25 African countries with over 8 million subscribers, now adds MultiChoice’s 14.5 million subscribers across 50 sub-Saharan countries, significantly strengthening its pan-African footprint.

This deal brings together French, English, and Portuguese content portfolios, creating a multilingual pay-TV powerhouse capable of serving Africa’s diverse cultural and linguistic markets.

What This Means for Africa

For MultiChoice, the acquisition signals new financial strength and strategic direction. The South African broadcaster is expected to benefit from:

  • Fresh capital injection.
  • Upgrades in broadcast technology.
  • Accelerated digital transformation.
  • Expanded investment in locally produced entertainment and sports.

Canal+ has pledged to invest around 26 billion rand over the next three years into public interest initiatives, aligning with the Tribunal’s conditions and reinforcing its commitment to African storytelling and talent development.

Outlook

In a joint statement, Canal+ and MultiChoice emphasized:

“We will maintain funding for South African general entertainment and sports content, providing local content creators with a strong foundation for future success.”

Industry watchers say this merger could reshape the pay-TV industry across Africa, especially as Canal+ pushes toward a goal of reaching 50 to 100 million subscribers continent-wide.

With this move, Canal+ not only extends its global influence but also deepens its investment in Africa’s fast-growing media and entertainment sector, which continues to attract attention from major global players.

BBNaija Day 54 housemates recover after freaky fun night

It was all fun and games in Biggie’s house last night as the housemates let loose in a wild session of spicy charades that kept everyone laughing into the early hours. But after so much energy, Day 54 began at a much slower pace.

The night’s highlight was a daring twist on charades where the housemates had to guess sexual positions through live demonstrations. The boys gave their best efforts, with Kola stealing the spotlight and eventually clinching victory for the guys with his bold antics.

Not to be outdone, the ladies brought their A-game. Zita wowed the house when she pulled off a daring split on Kaybobo, but it was Joanna who claimed the crown with an outrageous stunt that left the house in stitches.

FIRS

By morning, the house was unusually quiet. Most of the housemates stayed in bed until 11 a.m., recovering from the fun-filled night. Once up, they eased back into routine. Joanna and Mensan served their punishments by crawling across the house, while Isabella got busy scrubbing the toilets after being tagged the “house snail of the week.”

The party vibes may have slowed them down, but the energy in the house remains high as the BBNaija S10 journey continues.

Rema Faces Backlash Over Alleged Police Harassment of Contractor Amaka Obasi

Rema vs Amaka Obasi

Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, is facing backlash on social media following allegations that he used the Nigeria Police Force to harass and detain a contractor, Amaka Obasi, over a payment dispute.

The claims were made on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as Derrick (@software_artist), who alleged that Rema had engaged Amaka for multiple renovation projects, including work on his mother’s house in Benin, his personal residence, and later commissioned her to build a music studio and improve a water system.

FIRS

According to Derrick, the disagreement began after Amaka requested payment for services rendered. He alleged that Rema tricked her into attending a meeting, after which she was arrested by operatives of the Force CID at Alagbon, Lagos, and forced to pay over ₦1 million as bail over the weekend.

“Rema is using the Nigeria Police Force to harass and detain Amaka Obasi all because she asked for payment on the project he commissioned her to do,” Derrick claimed in a widely shared post.

The allegations have sparked widespread criticism online, with many users demanding accountability from the police and urging Rema to respond to the claims.

As of press time, neither Rema nor the Nigeria Police Force has issued an official statement regarding the matter.

BBNaija S10: Denari, Tracy Evicted as Ebuka Steals Show with Obasanjo-Inspired Agbada

Published

BBNaija S10: Denari and Tracy evicted, Ebuka dazzles in Obasanjo-inspired agbada, and ex-housemate Adekunle opens up on intimacy in the house.

The drama and glamour of Big Brother Naija Season 10 intensified on Sunday night with a double eviction, a bold fashion statement from host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, and fresh conversations around housemates’ intimacy in the show.

Denari and Tracy Evicted

Housemates Denari and Tracy became the latest contestants to leave the house during the live eviction show in Lagos.

Denari was the first to be evicted. On stage, Ebuka teased him about missing fellow housemate Doris, hinting it might have influenced his early exit. Denari, however, said he was looking forward to life after the show, revealing plans to pursue careers in acting, music, and entertainment hosting—even joking that he could replace Ebuka as BBNaija host, a remark that drew laughter from fans.

Tracy soon followed as the second eviction of the night. Reflecting on her time in the house, she admitted she had grown tired of the experience, describing her stay as full of “ups and downs.” Though she confessed she had no immediate post-eviction plans, Tracy said she was open to embracing any opportunities that come her way.

Ebuka also highlighted her close bond with fellow housemate Zita, praising their “sismance” as one of the positive dynamics of the season.

Ebuka Stuns in Obasanjo-Inspired Agbada

Beyond the evictions, host Ebuka once again stole the spotlight with his fashion-forward tribute to Nigerian history.

He arrived in an Obasanjo-inspired agbada, a creative recreation of the attire worn by former Head of State Olusegun Obasanjo during his 1977 White House visit with U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

Sharing the look on his X handle, Ebuka wrote:
“Recreated by @deco_d29, inspired by the viral photo of Nigeria’s longest serving head of state, President Olusegun Obasanjo at the White House with former US President, Jimmy Carter in 1977.”

The richly embroidered agbada, paired with a regal cap and walking staff, drew admiration online and cemented Ebuka’s reputation as a style icon of the BBNaija franchise.

Ex-Housemate Weighs In on Intimacy in the House

Meanwhile, former housemate Adekunle Olapade stirred conversation off-stage after commenting on the rising intimacy in Season 10, tagged “10/10.”

With videos of relationships between Koyin and Isabella as well as Jason Jae and Sultana making rounds, Adekunle explained in an interview with Pulse that nudity within the house plays a role in fueling attraction.

“All the housemates see each other naked,” he said. “You cannot be in a house with somebody you see without clothes almost every day and not feel attracted to them. It won’t work.”

Adekunle, who competed in the Level Up season (2022) and the All Stars edition, added that critics of housemates’ intimacy were being “hypocritical,” insisting there was nothing wrong with consenting adults forming relationships in the house.

The Season Heats Up

With Denari and Tracy gone, Season 10 of Big Brother Naija is tightening up as new alliances, romances, and rivalries take center stage. From Ebuka’s fashion moments to shifting dynamics in the house, viewers remain glued to their screens as the race for the grand prize continues.
