Court Grants Reps Member, Alex Ikwechegh N500k Bail Over Assault of Bolt Driver.

A magistrate court in Abuja has granted Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, bail in the amount of N500,000 for assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver. The incident occurred on October 27 in Abuja’s Maitama district when Ikwechegh slapped and verbally abused Abuwatseya, who simply asked him to approach the car to receive his package.

Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was charged with three counts of assault and threat to life. He pleaded not guilty to the charges brought by the Inspector-General of Police’s office. His counsel requested bail, which Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted with two sureties totaling N500,000.

The sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide utility bills as proof of residency. The case has been adjourned until November 8, 2024. This incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many calling for Ikwechegh’s suspension from the House of Representatives.

It’s worth noting that Bolt, the ride-hailing platform, has expressed concern over the incident and is investigating the matter to assist the driver.
