A probe into the imprisonment of Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, has revealed some interesting findings. An investigative panel set up by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, discovered that there’s no evidence to support claims that Bobrisky was housed outside of prison walls during her six-month sentence for naira abuse.
Bobrisky was sentenced on April 12, 2024, and released on August 5, 2024. During her imprisonment, she was transferred from the Kuje Custodial Centre to Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri-Apapa, Lagos, and finally to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, where she was discharged.
However, the panel did find that Bobrisky’s transfer to a maximum security facility as a first offender was a violation of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019. Additionally, the panel discovered that Bobrisky enjoyed several privileges while in custody, including:
- Special Accommodations: furnished single cells and access to a humidifier
- Visitation Rights: frequent visits from family and friends
- Personal Services: designated inmates to run errands
- Access to Amenities: fridge, television, and possibly her phone
The panel recommends further investigation into whether these privileges were granted due to corrupt practices or financial motivations. They also suggest setting clear guidelines to prevent discriminatory treatment of inmates based on socio-economic status.
