Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
New signing Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal of the match in the 13th minute, heading in from a Declan Rice corner after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was unsettled under pressure from William Saliba.
United created several chances to equalise, with debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo forcing strong saves from David Raya. Patrick Dorgu also went close when his shot struck the post.
Arsenal handed a debut to striker Viktor Gyökeres, while Benjamin Šeško came off the bench for United. Other new signings including Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, and Dorgu also featured.
Despite being on the back foot for much of the game, Arsenal held firm to claim three points in what was billed as a tough opening test. The result gives Mikel Arteta’s side an early boost in their title push, while Erik ten Hag’s United will be left frustrated after failing to convert their chances.
